NOTES ON SOME PLANTS: the MILK THISTLE (Silybum marianum) it enjoyed at one time a lot of respect in the popular medicine, respect that has falling through unjustifiably. The plant, in fact, is rich of therapeutic virtue that makes particularly precious for the liver dysfunctions. The fruits of the Milk thistle, improperly called seeds, they contain a denominated active principle called Silymarin that has an hepatotropic activity and it is for this motive that the Thistle enters in different products formulations that boast this action. It is the term Silymarin to classify the flavonolignans, however in the primary isomers active chemical group of the Milk Thistle. These molecules are never been found first in nature (they seem to derive from the union of a molecule called taxipholin with the coniferous ethylic alcohol) and they have shown a strong hepaprotective action. The Silymarin and his principal isomer, the Silybin, has shown besides to possess antioxidants preventing principles from the oxidation of the lipids and the destruction of the membranes in the cells. Tests in laboratory and clinical experimentations have, in fact, tried that the Silymarin possesses an effect on the cellular membrane of the hepatocyta preventing the penetration of various toxic substances making inside the liver very difficult (membranous activity), hindering the fat degeneration and the necrosis of the cell. The fruits of the Milk thistle have a regenerative action liver level; in fact, it accelerates the process of regeneration of the liver parenchyma, because the synthesis of RNA is increased for the stimulation activity of the RNA polymerase. The Silymarin, on the lysosmal lesions and ethanol mitochondria, are able to positively intervene bringing them to the normal structure and also stimulating the compromised protein synthesis in the alcohol lesions. Saba P. and collaborators, in their text "Epatologia" they believe that in the viral hepatitis the Silymarin acts limiting, through the protection of the hepatocitharie membranes, the hook-up of the viral agent to the situated cellular receptors externally to the citoplasmatic membranes, so doing, therefore, the Silymarin would reduce the number of hepatices parasite and for this the parenchyma damage and the levels of transaminase. The Milk thistle is a particularly valid agent in the phytotherapeutic treatment of the hepatitis, it favours the regeneration of the liver cell and it assures a choleretic and a stimulation of the organic defences. The Milk thistle can help rejuvenate the liver and also to protect it from possible future damages. Whoever has had hepatitis’s, cirrhosis or other dysfunctions of the liver he/she should add the Milk thistle as a salutation component, in effect, it would be good for preventive purpose or of maintenance, in the measure of 200 mg of Silymarin a day, before lunch. The ARTICHOKE (Cynara scolymus) it is a regulator of the bilious flow and an hepatoprotector and it is useful in the hepatobiliary throngs and can assuage the symptomatology; it decreases the production of cholesterol and triglyceride.
