NOTES ON SOME PLANTS: HAWTHORN (Crataegus oxyacantha) contains flavonoids (quercetin, rutin), triterpenes, cyanogenic glycosides, amines (trimethylamine, only in its flower), polyphenols, coumarins, tannins. It has got important trobophylic and antisclerotic activities. It is an excellent regulator of cardiac motion, slowing it down. It tones myocardium mostly at the left side. CHICORY (Cichorium intybus) has diuretic, tonic, cholagogues and stomachic properties, but recent studies have shown, on the contrary, that chicory tincture, come in contact with isolated hearts of frogs, causes a marked reduction of cardiac rhythm amplitude. MOTHERWORT (Leonorus cardiaca) contains flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins and leonurine. This plant has been used for a long time because of its action on heart functioning. In the seventeenth century, herbalist Nicholas Culpeper claimed that "there was no plant better than motherwort to send away melancholy vapors from heart, to reinforce it and make our own spirit happy”. OLIVE acts as a hypotensive and vasodilator through principles contained in its leaves (elenolide and oleuropein) that are suppose to exert their own action mainly at coronary arteries level. This action is sensible in supraventricolar tachycardia cases associated with hypertension and makes olive an excellent hypotensive and coronary protector. CSQP of BITTER ORANGE (Citrus aurantium), extracted from flowers, is useful in nervous excitement states, insomnia, headaches, palpitations, heart spasms and is a relaxing remedy for modern life.
