NOTES ON SOME PLANTS: RHUBARB (Rheum officinalis) is a plant rich in oxalic acid with eupeptic, digestive and tonic action, it is an excellent cholagogue and helps liver to produce bile, it is also a good purgative. DANDELION (Taraxacum officinale) is useful as a draining and depurant for hepato-renal disorders and in gallbladder pathologies. Of WHITE HOREHOUND WORT (Marrubium vulgare) we only use the plant which has tonic, sudorific, expectorant, detergent and digestive properties. It has good draining functions for lungs, liver and skin. Of SARSAPARILLA (Smilax medica) we use its roots, indeed, they have sudorific and purifying properties. These roots are also used in skin diseases because accelerate its replacement. Of COUCH GRASS (Agropyrum repens), for medical science, we use its roots, so rich in sugars: glucose and, above all, levulose. This last one is a good blood and liver depurant; its roots also contain a number of salts of potassium and nitrate which give the plant diuretic properties. It is a very valuable plant because of its purifying properties. BURDOCK (Arctium lappa) is a plant commonly used in folk medicine (an Italian common saying tells: “Bardana che ogni male risana” (“Burdock that heals all evil”). It has diaphoretic properties (increasing the secretion of perspiration) as well as diuretic, cleansing, detergent properties and stimulating liver functions. Of this plant we use its roots. Of this plant we use its roots. FENNEL (Foeniculum vulgare) activates functions of digestive glands and is useful as a carminative (i.e. as a sedative of intestinal gas), it is a diuretic. It is a "Hot Seeds" component (which are used to facilitate digestion or to remove intestinal gas). They are 4 of them; the other 3 are: dill, cumin and anise.
