NOTES ON SOME PLANTS: the bulb of GARLIC (Allium sativum) contains an inactive substance called alliin which, crushing its bulbs, becomes an active substance called allicin. Garlic has important cardiovascular and hypotensive action, produces a decrease in blood pressure, both maximum and minimum, caused by vasodilation of arterioles and capillaries and a fluidification of blood. OLIVE (Olea europea), by its lactone glucosides, as elenolide and oleoeuropeine contained in its leaves, it certainly acts as a hypotensive vasodilator, locating its operations primarily in arteries and coronary arteries. This action, that is showed in supraventricular tachycardia cases associated with hypertension, makes olive compounds appreciable hypotensive and coronary protectors. For vasodilator action of this plant can also be seen in coronary arteries, some scholars presume that this fact depends on a muscular event rather than nervous one; that is hypotensive action would be consequent upon a vasodilatation caused by a myolitic effect of olive active principles towards muscle fibres (INVERNI DELLA BEFFA, Manuale di Fitoterapia, Milano 1951). About HORSETAIL (Equisetum arvense), we have great interest in some of its active principles and in particular isoquercitin and kaemferol which have got a strong diuretic action, helped by mineral ions, existing in this plant. HAWTHORN has got important trombophylic and antisclerotic activities. It is an excellent regulator of cardiac motion, slowing it down. It tones up myocardium mostly at the left side. Its flowers are rich in quercetin (an active ingredient). It is a vessel dilator at coronary level. BITTER ORANGE (Citrus aurantium var. amara) flowers have a sedative and antispasmodic action and are recommended in nervous excitement states. They calm heart rate and palpitations.
